Stop & Shop workers to vote on pact on Sunday

The Boston Globe
Some 43,000 unionized workers
at Stop & Shop Supermarket Cos. will vote Sunday to ratify a new three-year
contract or go on strike.
Both sides return to the negotiating table today to hear Stop &
Shop’s response to final proposals submitted last week by five United Food &
Commercial Workers locals from Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island.
“There’s not going to be any more extensions - this is it,” said Richard
Charette, president of Local 1445 in Dedham. “We’ve made progress on a lot
of issues, but we have not made progress on the issues that can either
prevent or cause us to be on the streets on Sunday.”
The unions want a flat $40-a-week annual increase for full-time employees,
while Stop & Shop has pushed for a $20-a-week increase awarded as a $10
increase each February and another $10 increase each August, Charette said.
Several unions rallied in support of the
UFCW locals at Stop & Shop’s Quincy
headquarters yesterday.
