| The United Food &
Commercial Workers said its 43,000 members will have a new
contract or walk picket lines Sunday.
The union and Stop & Shop are scheduled to
resume negotiations Thursday.
The five UFCW locals and Stop & Shop have been
bargaining for months without a resolution, despite the
expiration of the old contract that covered workers in
Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts.
Brian Petronella, UFCW Local 371 president and
an international UFCW vice president, said all five locals have
scheduled votes on a new contract for Sunday. Members of Local
371 will meet in Bridgeport.
Westport-based Local 371 represents
approximately 5,000 meat cutters and deli workers at Connecticut
and some Massachusetts Stop & Shops.
Farmington-based Local 919 represents almost
10,000 workers including clerks, cashiers and Dunkin' Donuts
workers within the supermarkets.
The locals said they handed Stop & Shop
officials a comprehensive contract last Saturday. The two sides
have not met since, as Stop & Shop goes over the proposal,
according to Petronella. Negotiaions could run through Saturday. |
