Stop & Shop Members Making Progress in Extended Negotiations

After having made some progress toward reaching a contract agreement with Stop & Shop on Thursday, UFCW bargaining committee members in New England continued talks this morning.  Though originally slated to end Thursday evening, negotiations have been extended for 24 hours.

The biggest sticking point so far in negotiations has been health care.  UFCW members showed their strength and unity on Thursday when, instead of presenting five comprehensive health care proposals, the five Locals agreed to seek a single proposal. Now members are waiting for a counterproposal from Stop & Shop.

"We've gone from practically stopped for many, many sessions to a snails' pace, but we're moving and that's what's important," said Jim Riley, Secretary-Treasurer of Local 328.

Members could still strike as early as midnight tonight if talks collapse.  New England Stop & Shop workers are prepared for this and are standing together, continuing to educate the public about the company's proposals and asking for support in case of a strike.
