Southern California UFCW Members
Vote to Authorize Strike
On Sunday, UFCW members and grocery workers in Southern
California voted to authorize a potential strike at Albertsons stores. UFCW
members decided to target the employer because they have been in talks with
Albertsons the longest, and have been frustrated by the company's stalling
tactics preventing negotiation of a fair contract.
Workers in Southern California simply want equal pay for
equal work, with quality affordable health care and retirement benefits for
all workers. Earlier this year, Southern California workers
were able to negotiate fair contracts including those provisions with
regional employers Gelsons and Stater Bros. If smaller regional
companies can afford to treat their workers with fairness, then surely
Albertsons can do the same.
"I want to provide a good life for my family, and I work hard for my
employer," said UFCW member Sharlette Villacorta. "Now that the
employers are making such huge profits, I think they need to show grocery
workers and our families the respect we deserve."
