Democratic Legislators and Grocery Workers to Call on Safeway and Albertsons to Negotiate Fairly for Health Care and Wages

(Helena, MT) –Democratic legislators, grocery workers and their representatives of the United Food and Commercial Workers (UFCW) will hold a press conference today at 1:30 in Helena to urge the management and owners of Safeway and Albertsons to bargain fairly with grocery employees across Montana.   Montana grocery workers have been working without a contract since October of 2006, and negotiations over wages and health coverage are coming to a head this week.  Legislators will release a letter of support signed by numerous colleagues urging that the companies listen to the families and workers effected by the outcome of these negotiations.

“Our friends and neighbors, the workers in Safeway and Albertsons across our state haven’t received a raise in five years.  As a result, they have been unable to keep up with the cost of living in our state.  We find this unacceptable, especially since these workers have helped to make Safeway and Albertsons very profitable and successful,” said Rep. Bob Bergren (D-Havre), Deputy Minority Leader in the MT House of Representatives.  “We want to see good faith bargaining in the next few critical days.”
