Oregon Members Continue to Fight, Despite Slow Pace of Negotiations

Members of UFCW Local 555 are standing strong and continuing to fight for a fair contract, despite the slow pace of ongoing negotiations.

The bargaining parties met the 22nd in Eugene, Oregon, and continued to discuss open issues. Most of the day was spent discussing the benefit design of the health and welfare plan, which was met with modest progress.

The companies also presented a meat proposal which contained 44 take-aways, including: opening new stores non-union, eliminating overtime after 8 hours in a day, eliminating Sunday premiums, night premiums, and holiday premiums for new hires. The companies are also proposing random drug testing, mandatory store meetings any time they want them, restricting union visitation to non-work areas, 60 day maximum back pay for wrongful discharge and layoff.

New hires will also have to average 32 hours a week to qualify for vacation pay, sick pay, funeral leave and jury duty. The new contract would have a duration of five years and include longer wage progressions if the company were to have its way. Members won't stand for a contract like this, and will continue to do what it takes to get a fair contract for all workers.

The next set of negotiations is set for June 5th.
