Spokane Workers Stand Strong for Good Jobs

Who:
1,824 Members of UFCW Local 1439 in Spokane, Washington

What:
Members are fighting for affordable, quality health care, a living wage, and more 40-hour positions
in separate bargaining with Rosauers, Albertsons, Fred Meyers Safeway.

When:
UFCW Local 1439 contract ended January 5, 2008.

What's At Stake:
The employers have focused on their need to be more competitive in the market. In order to do this the employers have stated that they need a less restrictive contract as well as economic relief if they are to fund health care, pension and provide wage increases for “current employees.” Many of the proposed relief measures are would make it impossible for employees to earn a wage they and their families could live on.

UFCW Local 1439 members in Spokane, Washington packed their local union hall on March 3 and 4th during negotiations with their employer. The negotiations are open to members (and members are strongly encouraged to attend) and those members came to send a message to their employer--agree to a fair contract for your workers, and share your success with us.

Members are fighting hard for a three year versus a four year agreement, hard money increases rather than bonuses, and affordable improvements to health and welfare. They are also trying to stave off employer-sponsored proposals that would gut contract language.

At the meetings this week, the union exchanged and discussed language proposals with the company. They were strongly encouraged by the turnout of members at the meeting, and encourage even more Local 1439 members to attend the next meetings.

The next bargaining meetings will be held at the Local 1439 Union Hall, on March 26 and 27.  Please see www.ufcw1439.org for more information on the meetings and other details.

Bargaining continues to progress slowly, but surely. There have been four meetings so far and contract extensions are currently in place.

UFCW Local 1439 members began bargaining for a new contract today. Workers are determined to remain strong and stick together in the face of outrageous demands from the company, including getting rid of most overtime, attacking holiday pay and premium pay, and reducing vacation pay for new hires.

Spokane members will stand strong in demanding a fair contract--one with affordable, quality health care, fair and equitable wages, and a secure retirement for all.
