Saint Paul UFCW Members Set to Vote on
Contract...but Where to Vote?
In Minnesota, Local
789 is all set to vote on a tentative agreement—but then the employers
announced that they would NOT let members vote in their break rooms. In
spite of them having voting times and grid for the last month, they waited
until today to inform the committee of their decision.
Union President Don
Seaquist informed the Employer group that Local 789 would then “vote in
your parking lots” or wherever it took to allow members to vote where they
work. The negotiation committee is furious over this short-sighted decision.
For members planning on voting or attending the scheduled informational
meetings at the Union hall, there are no changes to those times.
Local 789 is in the
process of renting vans for the vote and will stick with the original model
of store times. It just will be outside, public, noisy and visible! The
committee has received assurances that members working during their store
location voting times will be allowed to punch out to vote. Voting on your
Union contract is one of the most important rights members have, and Local
789 has vowed to do anything possible to enable members to participate in
this important vote.
Some aspects of the
contract are still being worked out, but Local 789 is committed to updating
the members after each session of negotiation. Keep checking Local 789’s
website and
www.groceryworkersunited.org for more
updates and information.
