(WTNH)_ Healthcare negotiations could have an impact on your next trip
to the grocery store. Union workers with Shop and Stop may soon be
walking the picket line.
Stop and Shop union workers rejected the
companies latest contract proposal and voted last night to go ahead with
a strike if they don't reach an agreement. A strike would affect about
15,000 cashiers, food, and clerical workers who are union members in
Connecticut.
The sticking point is health care issues. The union wants Stop and
Shop to keep paying 100 percent of health insurance but the company
wants employees to have paycheck deductions. The company says it's
health and welfare plan allows it to be competitive with other food
retailers in New England.
Both sides are scheduled to meet again a few times this week. If
there is no agreement by the time the current contract expires, next
Sunday, and it's not extended workers will strike Monday, February 19th.
